The classic vegan Pina Colada smoothie turned into a gluten-free and sugar-free breakfast drink. Refreshing and rejuvenating.
It has been incredibly hot here in Penang Malaysia where D and I have been renting an apartment for the last month.
I mean I don’t know if it’s just me or if everyone reacts to the heat the same way I do.
My body is struuuuuggaling. Whenever I’m outside I seem to instantly start sweating and look disheveled right away. My hair gets in my face, my clothes cling to me, I just get irritable and impatient. It’s too much for me.
Maybe after a while your body starts to adapt, but I’m just forced to believe I’m better suited to colder climates.
To save myself from the heat I need a cool refreshing drink; pretty much at all times. What is it about the heat that smoothie instantly are craved by every ounce of your being? Anyone else? Or just me? Well D is right there with me I know. He cannot go a single day in a hot climate without a smoothie. Sometimes he gets two; though that is usually reserved for rough travel days.
So this vegan pina colada smoothie is really specially made for D. Fresh pineapples, bananas and coconut milk. Blend that right up and you’ll magically feel refreshed and rejuvenated in an instant.
The kind of drink I need daily in the Malaysian heat (or any other time it’s hot and sunny outside). I mean it seriously feels like it’s 1000 degrees here every day for my sensitive to the heat body!
And since this is gluten free, vegan and sugar free this might even make for a good breakfast smoothie. Are you with me? Say it with me – vegan pina colada smoothie for breakfast!
And if you’re having one of those days, feel free to sneak a bit of rum in here too. Or maybe two shots worth. Hey, I don’t know what kind of day you’ve had. Who am I to judge?
Oh yes and I just had to serve this vegan Pina Colada smoothie in a wine glass – what better glass to drink out of I ask? Let’s get festive!
One of the benefits of being a grown up — drinking out of wine glasses. And none of those stemless wine glasses for me. I’ll take the risk any day and try to properly balance a wine glass with a stem. I just always feel so much more grown up and elegant when drinking out of a proper wine glass. You with me?

What kind of coconut milk do you use? The kind in the refrigerated section, or the shelf-stable kind in a can? I believe the one in the can is thicker, but I’m not sure. Sounds delicious!

I use the kind in the can. Here in Malaysia where I am currently renting an apartment I buy it in cardboard containers (in the non refrigerated section) but it’s the same stuff as in the can. You want the thicker one. I think the refrigerated one is just coconut water?
